Next Generation

This year, NAIDOC Week marks a powerful milestone: 50 years of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience. The 2025 theme, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy," celebrates not only the achievements of the past but the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors.

Martumili Next Generation also reflects the Martumili value of marlpa (togetherness) – how Martu artists and staff are working together across generations to keep the vision, strength and legacy of community collaboration, cultural identity, and creative excellence alive at the art centre.

Together -

We tribute artists who are committed to sharing their knowledge and experience in the community through their creative practice, whilst cultivating the growth, development and evolving creative expression of next generation artists.

Strength, vision and legacy –

Parnngurr Community School

In the spirit of marlpa, Martumili collaborated with Parnngurr Community School students, under the guidance of Senior artists and schoolteachers Carol Williams and Noreena Kadibil, creating works exploring learnings of endangered animals and local Country. Passing on knowledge of animals in the area, Carol spoke about her work as a ranger on a recent trip to Mulyamiji. Photos and stories of the trip were shared along with Carol's paintings, which often include bush animals and food. The endangered Mulyamiji (Great Desert Skink) was a popular subject matter!

Martuku Jijiku Maya

Martuku Jijiku Maya is a residential hostel in Newman (Nyiyaparli) for Martu secondary students living in remote Aboriginal communities in the Western Desert. The hostel allows them to pursue education and further training while maintaining strong connections with family and Country. Young artists’ creative expression started soaring skyward recently, with inspiration from fellow Martumili artist Sylvia Wilson and the support and encouragement of staff.
